In a significant logistical operation, the Pakistan Airport Authority (PAA) is set to transport a decommissioned MD-83 aircraft from Karachi to Hyderabad by road. The aircraft, weighing 60 tons and measuring 160 feet in length, will be disassembled into two parts to facilitate the journey via National Highway. Advanced trailers equipped with German hydraulic systems are being used for safe transport.
The aircraft, grounded since a crash landing in 2011 due to a nose wheel malfunction, will be repurposed for training at Hyderabad Airport. The initiative follows the successful relocation of a similar plane earlier this year, marking continued efforts by PAA to utilize retired aircraft for educational and training purposes.
Special permissions have been obtained for this unique operation, ensuring minimal disruption along the highway. The move highlights the authority’s commitment to sustainable practices by giving a second life to outdated aviation equipment.
